Brett S. Sheedy, CPA, MBA, JD, LLM

Brett grew up in Hoover, Alabama, and graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and graduated Cum Laude from Auburn University Harbert School of Business. He went on to obtain a law degree from Samford University Cumberland School of Law on a full academic scholarship, where he served on student government and interned at the Internal Revenue Service, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and a local law firm. After graduating in 1998, Brett passed the Alabama State Bar exam and obtained his license to practice law.

Brett started his career in 1998 at Big 4 accounting firms as a Tax Consultant, spending several years working between PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young. In 2001, while working at Big 4 firms, he passed the CPA Exam and obtained his CPA License.

Brett left the Big 4 accounting firms in 2002 to take a position in Montgomery, Alabama, as the Assistant Finance Manager for United States Senator Jeff Sessions’ campaign.

After the campaign, Brett returned to Birmingham and worked at the law firm of Waldrep, Stewart & Kendrick as a business law and tax law associate. While working in that law practice, by attending class on nights and weekends, Brett obtained a Masters in Tax Law (LLM) degree from the University of Alabama School of Law.

After obtaining a Masters in Tax Law degree in 2005, Brett started his own law practice, focusing on business law, small business accounting and consulting, individual and business taxation, and estate planning.

In 2006, while continuing his law practice, Brett passed the FINRA Series 7 exam and obtained a General Securities Representative license, and the FINRA Series 66 exam and obtained an Investment Advisor Representative license, and the Alabama Life & Health license, and collaborated in the launch of financial advisory firm.

In 2008, Brett took a break from professional practice and entered the Masters in Business Administration program at the University of Alabama Birmingham Collat School of Business. While attending UAB, he worked as a graduate teaching assistant in the College of Business. And as an employee of the Athletic Department, tutoring student athletes in business courses. Brett credits that work teaching others, with teaching him how to explain complex business, tax, and legal concepts in a way that people without a history in those areas can understand.

While in the MBA program, Brett also worked as a seasonal tax preparer at a local multiple-office accounting firm. His MBA capstone course business plan was on creating and implementing a brand, an internet and social media presence, business and workflow processes, and procedures for that firm. After graduating with honors in 2011, Brett joined that accounting firm as a Tax Manager and went on to become President of the firm, implementing his business plan. During his four years in that role, the firm revenue doubled, resulting in his being awarded the Top Tiger award from the Auburn Harbert School of Business and the Top 25 in Business Excellence award from UAB.

In 2016, Brett started the company Strategic Tax & Accounting, LLC. Implementing the same business plan he formulated in the UAB MBA program, that company tripled in Revenue from 2017 through 2020. Resulting in his being awarded the Top Tiger Auburn Harbert School of Business award and the Top 25 in Business Excellence UAB award again in 2021 a second time, but for work at a company he founded.

In 2022, Brett was named one of the “Top CEO” finalists by the Birmingham Business Journal and named to the 2022 Birmingham Business Journal’s “Who’s Who in Accounting.”  And Brett was named one of UAB’s “Top 25 in Business Excellence” award winners, his third time to be recognized by this award since 2014.

Strategic Tax & Accounting LLC was named one of Birmingham’s largest CPA firms in its Book of Lists. And was named by Business Alabama as one of the largest firms in the State of Alabama.

Brett continues to offer estate planning and business law services through the law firm Strategic Law, LLC, but limiting those services to existing clients of Strategic Tax & Accounting, LLC.

The combination of experience in accounting, tax law, financial advising and entrepreneurship gives him a unique ability to analyze people’s business and financial issues from multiple perspectives without their having to visit or pay multiple professional offices. If his clients have legal, accounting, or business issues in which he does not specialize, he has a broad network of professionals to refer his clients while remaining engaged to ensure his client’s best interests are served.
